7/9/09 - Community Memorial tops in patient satisfaction, also awarded three-stars for post-operative care

Community Memorial led all Central New York hospitals and was well ahead of the national average in a survey that rated patient satisfaction. The hospital was also recognized for its above average performance on a critical indicator of post-operative care.

According to data collected by the Niagara Health Quality Coalition, 74 percent of Community Memorial patients who stayed over night in the hospital rated their experience a nine or ten. The national average was 64 percent.

Patients who stayed in the hospital overnight were asked to rate the hospital on a scale of 0 (worst hospital possible) to 10 (best hospital possible). Here's the percentage who rated their hospital either a 9 or a 10.

"These results re-enforce what we have known for a long time: excellent healthcare and personal attention make a difference our patients appreciate," said Community Memorial President and CEO David W. Felton. "This is a hospital-wide effort and the results are an indication of the commitment and dedication of our Employees, Medical Staff and Board Members."

Community Memorial Hospital also earned three stars (performance above the state average) on the New York State Hospital Report Card for postoperative pulmonary embolism or deep vein thrombosis. The achievement earns Community Memorial a place on the honor roll.

The independent coalition, based in the Buffalo suburb of Williamsville, ranks hospitals in 42 areas, including mortality rates for various procedures, the volume of procedures performed and patient safety indicators. The information comes from billing data hospitals send to the federal government.

The coalition ranks hospitals with one to three stars in comparison to the state average. One star means the hospital ranks below the state average, two is average and three means they rank above the state average.

The information is posted at www.myhealthfinder.com. Much of the information comes from calendar year 2007. The patient satisfaction and pain management rankings date to March 2008.
